Engr. Leo Agustin P. Vela, faculty of Camarines Norte State College, College of Engineering garnered the Outstanding Research and Development (R & D) Award 2018 for Energy, Utilities and Systems category. He personally received the award with a trophy plaque and cash prize on June 29, 2018 during the 8th Anniversary Celebration of the Department of Science and Technology, Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST PCIEERD) held at Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City. The award is given to recognize outstanding completed R & D projects in different categories. The competition is open to all Filipino scientists, researchers, and engineers from universities and colleges, R& D institutions, and private industries doing R & D in the following sectors: Industry, Energy, Utilities and Systems, Emerging Technology and Special concerns. Engr. Vela submitted his research titled Current Load Monitoring and Overload Alarm Mechanism for Convenience Outlets categorized under Energy, Utilities and System. After two and a half months rigorous evaluation process, his research was selected as one of the three finalists. He was notified by the award giving body to defend his research for final judging along with two other finalists from Electronics Industries Association of the Philippines and De La Salle University. Ultimately, Engr. Vela topped the final round of the competition making him the winner of the Outstanding Award 2018 in Energy, Utilities and Systems category.
