The Crown-of-Thorns Challenge: Preserving Marine Biodiversity

THE CROWN-OF-THORNS CHALLENGE: PRESERVING MARINE BIODIVERSITY By: CNSC ESD, 2025 Held on August 6โ€“8, 2025, at Balagbag Island, Calaguas, Vinzons, Camarines Norte, the three-day implementation of the Area Specific Action Plan (ASAP) under LGU-Vinzons focused on coral reef restoration. With the support of ten divers from Brgy. Mangcawayan, the team removed threats such as Crown-of-Thorns to help the reefs breathe and bloom once again. This initiative was made possible through the collaboration of CNSC and Tanggol Kalikasan, Inc., in partnership with the local government unit under the Environmental Justice Sector Reform in the Philippines Project (EJSRP) Phase 3. By controlling the damage caused by Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTS), we help preserve vital coral cover, safeguard the diverse species that rely on corals for food and shelter, and strengthen community engagement in reef conservation. These efforts also support our municipal fishers and enhance local tourism, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and thriving marine ecosystems for all.
